The 2021-2022 school year saw our first Transition Year Programme in Firhouse ETSS.
We have continued to build and improve our TY Programme and are having a great time as we develop the programme.

Dental Preventative Clinic
Our school has been invited to participate in an upcoming Dental Preventative Clinic, delivered at the School of Dentistry, RCSI, Sandyford in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE). This initiative aims to support the oral health and wellbeing of the community through early intervention and accessible preventative care.
As part of the Clinic, students aged 16 and over will be screened to assess suitability and, if suitable for undergraduate care under supervision, students may be offered:
- A dental health assessment

Preventative treatments such as fissure sealants, fluoride varnish application and cleaning

Practical guidance on oral hygiene and maintaining long-term oral health
Participation is voluntary and treatments will be provided free of charge, without any impact on benefits, and will be carried out under the supervision of qualified dental professionals. Consent forms and detailed information will be supplied in advance to ensure participants are fully informed.

Work Experience/Community Placement documents and dates

The process to begin looking for work experience starts in April of 3rd Year. Students prepare their CVs so they can spend the summer looking for work experience. It has been suggested to students that they are probably more likely to get success if they go into places and present themselves looking for work experience rather than sending emails.
The following work experiences have been suggested:
- Ask family and friends
- Go to local shops and businesses
- Dundrum Shopping Centre
- The Square shopping centre
- Charity shops
- Local libraries
- Local primary schools
- Local crèches
- Local Community Centre
- Find a career area that they are interest in e.g., architecture or law and contact a local architect or law firm
- TY.ie
- Together FM

National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI)
We are reaching out about an upcoming opportunity for students interested in our Transition Year (TY) work experience week at the National Maritime collage of Ireland.
Attached is an advert for the work experience which will include inter disciplinary learning of aspects in the collage. Also, the application form is attached.
We would ask that only two applications plus the relevant student’s CVs from your school be sent to us as we expect a high volume of interest. The Deadline for applications is October 2nd.
We are hosting an Open Day on November 5th. We would like to invite your school to attend and learn about the third level courses on offer.

Five Day 'Introduction to Aviation' Course
Introduction to Aviation Course:
The aviation industry is experiencing huge growth at the moment, with Boeing predicting that the industry will require 660,000 new pilots, 710,000 Maintenance Technicians, and 100,000 Cabin Crew over the next 20 years!
For anyone interested in a career in this sector, our 'Introduction to Aviation' course is a great start.
Our instructors are all experienced in the aviation world and bring a wealth of experience to the students.

Work experience outside these dates
If a student has an opportunity to do work experience outside of these dates the student should do the following:
- Email Claire Matthews and CC Eoin Houlihan, Niall Halpenny and the relevant Tutor on the email
- The email should have the dates and the organisation for which the work experience is being requested
- The email should have the reasons and benefits of doing the work experience.
- Completing work experience outside of these dates does not exempt a student from participating in the school-assigned work experience dates.

Assessment in Transition Year
To keep reporting in TY as regular as possible, there are going to be reported assessment moments throughout the year. This means that there will be no Winter check-in and Summer check-out. Instead, there are 5 reported assessment moments. It is hoped that these regular assessment moments can serve as a motivation for TY students. More regular reporting means that the TY team and parents/guardians can get a clear overview of how the year is going for a student.
Most subjects in TY will have 2 assessment moments over the course of the year. Shorter courses have 1assessment moment. As these are completed, teachers create their own ‘Class Assessment’ on VSware and provide rich feedback as part of this process. This feedback is available to students via VSware.
Each week during Studio time, students work on their portfolio. After the spring break each student will have a Transition Year checkout interview where they will present their portfolio and talk about their experiences during the year. This will be their 5th assessment.
