In Firhouse ETSS, reading for pleasure is very important to us as we know it supports our overall wellbeing and academic achievement. Developing a habit of reading is something that is so valuable in everyday life for us all.
We participate in the 'Wellread National Award' which is an initiative that seeks to involve the whole school community in establishing a culture of reading and that involves lots of fun and engaging reading activities.
As part of the school day we regularly take Wellread Time where we all have 5 - 10 minutes to take time out to read something of our choice. Reading is very much part of what we do in our school and we can all be caught reading at any time and in any place!
We also have lots of fun things happening to help us to spread the reading love bug!
Here's a snapshot of some projects we have undertaken in support of reading:
Wellread Circles
Our 1st and 2nd Year students enjoyed reading to the junior and senior infant pupils in Firhouse ETNS. Reading relationships make all the difference and help to build our community.
Wellread Coffee Mornings
On the 14th of November 2019 we held our first Welllread coffee morning. Students, parents and team members gathered in the school and had a chat about their favourite book over a cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. There may have been biscuits as a special treat!
Wellread Lunches
The team has started a book club that meets every six weeks. It's wonderful to talk about our chosen books and to discover books that we may not have chosen individually. Thank you to the Board of Management for providing the sandwiches.
