ASD Parent Support Group
- ASD Parent Support Group with Guest Speaker Marie Byrne 22.10.24
This Support group is for parents of primary and post-primary children with Autism. The aim of the group is to provide support, share ideas and a platform for parents to ask questions. Please note, this webinar is for parents only and will deal with the Theory of ASD from a parenting perspective and not a school perspective. Therefore, we would appreciate if SNA /Teachers did not book a place on this support webinar. This group will meet every 4/6 weeks.

Facilitator: Shaun Greville has returned to school in the Esker Centre, Ballinamere after 5 years secondment to the SESS and latterly NCSE. He fulfilled the roles of Advisor and Assistant National Coordinator for the autism team with a focus on in school support for teachers and both in school and external CPD regarding autism. He is a co author of Autism Good Practice Guidance for Schools.
Guest speaker: Marie Byrne, an experienced teacher & child & adolescent psychotherapist. After many years as an advisor with SESS/NCSE, she returned from secondment to work in a special class for autism in 2019. She has recently returned to study as a doctoral candidate focussing on strength-based inclusive practice in schools.

Planning the transition from school to college for students with special educational needs and/ or disabilities 'Disability Access Route to Education' (DARE), supports for students with disabilities in college, and what to expect from online or blended learning.
While this talk is for parents and school leavers, it may be useful for teachers / guidance counsellors and will look at:
- Applying to the DARE scheme
- Choosing the right course
- Registering with college Disability Services
- Understanding how college works
- Learning to learn online

Facilitator: Dr Alison Doyle is an independent educational psychologist with more than 35 years of experience. She designs and delivers transition programmes, and regularly provides seminars and workshops to parents and institutions. Alison is a visiting Lecturer with Trinity College and Dublin City University, and her research work includes transition from school to higher education for students with disabilities, supported employment for young people with intellectual disability, pre-entry transition programmes for students with ASD, and Autism and Pathological Demand Avoidance in Ireland.

UCD School of Business Open Evening
The UCD Lochlann Quinn School of Business will hold an in-person Open Evening on Tuesday, 15th October 2024, at 5.30pm.
This event is an opportunity for sixth year students interested in studying Business at UCD to learn about the range of programmes on offer and to speak with academic staff, professional staff and students about life as a student in one of Europe’s leading business schools.

DARE
DARE - Disability Access Route to Education
DARE is a third level alternative admissions scheme for school-leavers whose disabilities have had a negative impact on their second level education. DARE offers reduced points places to school leavers who, as a result of having a disability, have experienced additional educational challenges in second level education.
To be eligible for DARE you must meet both the DARE Educational Impact criteria and DARE Evidence of Disability criteria.
What types of disabilities does DARE consider?
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger’s Syndrome)
- Blind/Vision Impaired
- Deaf/Hard of Hearing
- Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) – Dyspraxia
- Dyscalculia/ Significant Numeracy Difficulties
- Dyslexia/ Significant Literacy Difficulties
- Mental Health Condition
- Neurological Condition (including Brain Injury and Epilepsy)
- Physical Disability
- Significant Ongoing Illness
- Speech and Language Communication Disorder

It is important to note that applicants applying under the following disability categories must provide a report that is less than 3 years old, i.e. dated after 1 February 2022
