Ski Trip 2025

Getting ski ready

Some guidance on the essentials your child will need for their adventure on the slopes.
We understand that for many families, this may be your first experience preparing for a ski trip. While it might be tempting to purchase new ski gear, there are plenty of cost-effective options available.
Borrowing from friends or family, exploring local charity shops, or even finding creative alternatives to specialised ski gear can work just as well, we will be doing that ourselves!
Ski Gear Essentials
  1. Waterproof Ski Jacket
  2. Waterproof Ski Pants
  3. Thermal Base Layers (tops and bottoms)
  4. Fleece or Insulated Mid-Layer
  5. Wool or Synthetic Socks (5 pairs)
  6. Waterproof thermal gloves
  7. Ski Goggles
  8. Balaclava or ski mask (optional, for very cold days)
Casual/Off-Slope Wear
  1. Warm sweaters
  2. Comfortable pants/jeans
  3. Gloves or mittens for casual use
  4. Scarf or neck gaiter
  5. Beanie or winter hat
  6. Sturdy winter boots with good grip - perhaps wear these over on flight to save room in the bag
Accessories
  1. Sunglasses with UV protection
  2. A high SPF suncream - can get very sunny on the slopes and therefore sunburn very easily on the face
  3. Lip balm - we would recommend this because of the cold and sun
  4. Toothbrush & toothpaste
  5. Deodorant - roll on rather than spray
  6. Small shower soap/gel
  7. Shampoo
Alternatives to Specialised Gear
If you don’t already own ski jackets or pants, here are some practical substitutes:
Ski Jacket Alternatives
  • Waterproof Rain Jacket with Layers: Use a rain jacket with at least 5,000 mm waterproofing and layer it with:
    • A thermal or fleece base layer
    • A warm mid-layer, like a down or insulated jacket
  • Insulated Winter Jacket:A regular winter coat with waterproofing or water-resistance works, especially if it has good insulation and a hood.
  • Softshell Jacket:If the weather isn’t too cold, a fleece-lined softshell jacket paired with thermal layers can be effective.
Ski Pants Alternatives
  • Waterproof Rain Pants:Pair these with:
    • Thermal leggings or fleece-lined tights underneath
    • Insulated pants like joggers for added warmth
  • Hiking Pants: Waterproof or water-resistant hiking pants with thermal layers underneath are suitable for milder conditions.
  • General Snow Bibs or Overalls: These can work well as a replacement for ski pants.
  • Layering Option: Combine thermal leggings or long johns with water-resistant or windproof outer pants (e.g., nylon or cargo pants).
Additional Tips
  • Waterproofing: Apply a waterproof spray to non-ski-specific outer layers to ensure they repel snow and moisture.
  • Snow Protection: Look for clothing with elastic or adjustable cuffs to keep snow out.
  • Mobility: Ensure all layers allow for easy movement and are not overly bulky.
  • Warm Accessories: Gaiters, long socks, and neck warmers can help fill gaps and add extra warmth.
If you have any questions or concerns about preparing for the trip, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
