Maths Week 2018

Our first successful ‘Maths Week 2018’ was held in Firhouse ETSS this week. There were lots of activities planned during the week for both staff and students to get involved in. The enthusiasm and energy was electric all week.

Our ‘Great Firhouse Bake Off’ was an outstanding success. Students and staff got creative in the kitchen to produce bakes of the highest standards. All of the bakers deserved a ‘Paul Hollywood handshake’. Who knew maths could taste so good!

Students were also busy ‘tweeting’ using the #iusemaths hashtag to share examples of where they use maths in their daily lives. Students became more aware of when they were using maths and how it helped them when skiing, planning bus journeys, baking or playing video games.Following from this, students put their ‘maths eyes’ on to take a photo of a seemingly ordinary object or scene and caption it to allude to the mathematical element. All entries have been submitted to the national competition ‘Have you got maths eyes?’. More information on: www.mathseyes.com

‘That’s maths’ also ran throughout the week with students pointing out mathematical elements of their lessons such as mathematical language used in English, graphs seen in Geography lessons as well as timelines in History.

During the week, students stepped outside the classroom setting during the maths lesson to participate in a maths trail around the school, both indoors and outdoors. Students used their iPads to scan QR codes which unlocked clues and challenges that they has to solve.Overall both students and staff had a lot of fun participating in maths week. We’re already looking forward to next year!
